Should You Ever Boost a Post?

What boosting actually buys

Boost optimises for engagement on the post by default — likes, comments, views. Those are the cheapest actions to buy and the least connected to anyone listening to your music.

You get a good-looking post and very little else. The same budget through the full ads interface, optimised for landing page views, reaches fewer people and produces more listeners.

What you lose by not using the ads manager

Audience control, exclusions, placement control, proper reporting, and the ability to run several creatives against each other. Boost gives you a broad audience and a single creative, which means you learn nothing you can reuse.

That last point matters most. The value of a small ad budget is the finding, and boosting is specifically the version that produces no finding.

Exception one: a post already outperforming

If a post is genuinely moving — well above your normal retention, comments arriving — a small boost can extend a wave that is already happening rather than trying to create one.

Cap it at ten or twenty and do it in the first day, while it is still climbing. Boosting a post three days later is paying to revive something that already stopped.

Exception two: an event with a date and a place

A gig announcement targeted at a radius around the venue is one of the few cases where broad local reach is exactly what you want, and where the objective genuinely is awareness rather than a listen.

Even then, set the location manually rather than accepting the default, which will happily spend your budget nationally.

What to do with the same money instead

Thirty-five dollars through the ads manager — five a day for a week, one ad set, three creatives, traffic objective — teaches you which clip works and which audience responds. That finding is reusable for every future release.

Boosting the same amount teaches you nothing and the reach evaporates. Same money, and one of the two leaves you better informed.

Frequently asked questions

Is boosting a post worth it for musicians?

Rarely. Boost optimises for engagement by default, which is the cheapest action to buy and the least connected to anyone listening. The same budget through the ads manager reaches fewer people and produces more listeners.

When should I boost a post?

Two cases: extending a post that is already outperforming, within the first day and capped at ten or twenty; and a gig announcement targeted at a radius around the venue.

What is better than boosting?

Five a day for a week through the ads manager, one ad set, three creatives, traffic objective. Same money, and it teaches you which clip and which audience work — a finding you reuse every release.
