# Mastering Music for Video Games

Game music often has to loop seamlessly, layer with other audio, and sit correctly whether a player has headphones on or a TV speaker turned low. Master with that reality in mind, not as a standalone linear piece.

## Make sure loop points are actually seamless

Any click, pop, or level jump at a loop point becomes maddening on repeat during actual gameplay, far more noticeable than in a one-time linear listen. Check the loop specifically by playing across the seam repeatedly, not just listening to the track once start to finish.

A short crossfade at the loop point, even a few milliseconds, often resolves a seam that sounds fine in isolation but clicks audibly on repeat.

## Leave headroom for in-engine mixing

Game audio engines typically mix music against sound effects and dialogue dynamically, adjusting levels in real time based on gameplay. A heavily limited, maximally loud master leaves the engine very little room to duck or blend it cleanly &mdash; a more moderate master with real headroom is more usable.

## Consider how layered stems will interact

Adaptive game scores often use separate stems &mdash; a base layer plus intensity layers that fade in during action &mdash; and each stem needs to sound balanced both alone and combined with the others. Master or at least level-check each stem independently, not just the fully combined mix.

This is different from a linear release, where you only ever hear the final combined mix. Game audio has to work in multiple possible combinations.

## Test on the actual playback context

Players hear game audio through everything from high-end headsets to a TV's built-in speakers at low volume during late-night sessions. Check how the master holds up at genuinely low playback volume specifically, since a lot of real game audio listening happens quieter than a dedicated music listening session would.

If low-end impact or clarity disappears at low volume, that's more of a real-world problem for game audio than it might be for a streaming single.

## True peak discipline still matters

Keep a &minus;1 dBTP ceiling regardless of the lower overall loudness target &mdash; game engines and platform certification processes can be strict about clipping, and a clean signal gives whatever real-time processing the engine applies clean material to work with.
