# How to Use a Countdown Properly

Published 25 August 2026, 18:00 UTC · updated 12 August 2026, 21:30 UTC · by Loopin

A countdown only works if each number carries something new. Ten posts saying a smaller number is not anticipation, it is attrition.

## Three posts, not ten

Day −7, day −2, day −1. That is the whole countdown. Every additional one asks for patience without giving anything, and the audience learns to skip the format — which then costs you the day-one post too.

The number is never the content. It is the timestamp on content that would have been worth posting anyway.

## Day −7 carries the artwork and the date

This is the only announcement. Artwork, title, date, and the pre-save link. It is the post people screenshot and the one you can point back to, so it should look like something rather than like a story sticker.

Pair it with the strongest clip you have. An announcement with no audio attached asks people to care about a date for a song they have not heard.

## Day −2 carries a reason

One specific thing about the song — where it was written, what it is about, the take that nearly did not happen. This is the post that converts interest into intent, because a date is not a reason and a story is.

Keep it to one detail. A paragraph of context reads as a press release; a single sentence reads as a person telling you something.

## Day −1 carries the clip you tested

The section that performed best during the pre-release window, with the date on screen. No new information — this post exists purely to be the last thing in the feed before the song exists.

Post it late in your largest listening market's evening. It should still be near the top of the feed when the track goes live.

## Use the countdown sticker once, and put the timer to work

The countdown sticker lets people opt into a reminder, which is genuinely useful and is the only mechanical benefit of the format. Use it on the day −7 post so it has a week to collect taps, then never again in the cycle.

And messages beat all three posts. Twenty individual messages in the final week convert better than the entire countdown, which is worth remembering before spending a day designing graphics.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many countdown posts should I do before a release?

Three: day -7 with the artwork, date and pre-save; day -2 with one specific story about the song; day -1 with your best-performing clip and the date on screen. More than that trains people to skip the format.

### Do countdown stickers work?

The reminder opt-in is genuinely useful and is the only mechanical benefit. Use it once, on the day -7 post, so it has a week to collect taps.

### What works better than a countdown?

Twenty individual messages in the final week. They convert better than the whole countdown combined, and they cost less than designing the graphics.
